Okay, so I was messing around with crossword puzzles the other day, and I got completely stuck on this one clue: “cut open, say.” It was driving me nuts! I stared at it, I paced around, I probably made that frustrated “ugh” sound a million times.
First, I tried just brainstorming words related to “cut open.” You know, like “slice,” “split,” “rend”… nothing fit. Then I thought, “Okay, what’s another way to say ‘say’?” I came up with things like “speak,” “utter,” “declare”…still nothing. It was like my brain was a total blank.
I decided to get a little more methodical. I grabbed a piece of paper and started writing down every possible word, even if it seemed ridiculous.
- “Cut open” + “say”:
- Opened? Said?
- incision + speaking?
- laceration + declare?
I was about to give up when some friends came by, and I asked them if they knew the answer, explaining my difficult situation.
one of them said what about if you just “say” the first two words, what do you have?
And after he said that I immediately realized I was overthinking it the whole time, and I was finally able to say the answer!
It also fit perfectly in the crossword.
