They ain’t always been the most famous, but they sure made a name for themselves back in 1990.

Now, back in them days, the Buffaloes were coached by a fella named Bill McCartney. He knew a thing or two ’bout football, let me tell ya. Under his watch, them boys went on to do somethin’ real special—win the national championship! And it ain’t no small feat, mind ya, ’cause there’s plenty of teams out there vyin’ for that top spot.

So, what happened in 1990, ya ask? Well, the Buffaloes had a mighty good season. They played in the Big Eight Conference, and boy, they didn’t lose a single conference game! That’s right, they went 7-0 in their conference. And overall, they ended up with an 11-1-1 record. Pretty good, eh? They scored a lot of points too—389 in total. That’s almost 30 points per game, which is real impressive.

But I reckon it wasn’t all about the offense, nope. Their defense was somethin’ to reckon with too. They only allowed 220 points the whole season. That’s mighty fine work from the fellas on the defense. And one of the biggest names on that team was the quarterback, Darian Hagan. Now, he didn’t throw the ball much, but when he did, he made it count. He didn’t complete every pass, but he sure could run that option and get them yards when it mattered.

Now, ’bout that national title—folks say the Buffaloes won it all in 1990. They didn’t just get lucky neither. They earned it! They was crowned the AP National Champions, and let me tell ya, that was a big deal. They split the title with Georgia Tech, who was also doin’ well that season, but them Buffaloes held their heads high, knowin’ they were at the top of the heap. It was a big moment for them and their fans, and they sure was proud of that victory.

So what made that season so special? Well, it was a mix of good coaching, strong teamwork, and plenty of heart. The players knew what they had to do, and they went out there and gave it their all, every game. It wasn’t just the big wins that got ’em to the top, it was all the little things too—the hard work, the practice, and the grit.

Now, if we’re talkin’ ’bout big games, we gotta mention that matchup with Notre Dame. That one right there was a real nail-biter. Them Buffaloes pulled out a win, 10-9, and that game really sealed the deal for ’em. They showed everybody that they was ready for the big leagues, and they weren’t gonna back down from anyone. And in the end, that win over Notre Dame helped them secure that championship title they so rightly deserved.

So, even though it’s been quite a few years since 1990, that championship still gets talked about, especially when you bring up the Colorado Buffaloes. It’s a piece of history they can hang their hats on, and they’ll always be proud of it, even if they ain’t had another national title since then. They proved that even a team from Boulder can rise to the top and take on the big boys of college football.

In the end, it’s all about heart, grit, and doin’ your best. And them Buffaloes did just that in 1990, and that’s why they’re still remembered as national champions to this very day. Ain’t that somethin’ to be proud of?
