Alright folks, let me tell you about my little adventure with “mike rome.” I know, the name sounds kinda cryptic, but trust me, it’s just a simple project I tackled to learn something new.
It all started when I was bored one weekend. You know how it is, scrolling through tech blogs, feeling like you’re missing out on some cool new thing. Anyway, I stumbled upon some stuff about data pipelines and thought, “Hey, that sounds kinda neat.” So I decided to dive in, headfirst.
First thing I did was figure out what “mike rome” even meant in my context. Turns out, it was just a placeholder name I used for a fictional project involving grabbing some data, cleaning it up, and shoving it into a database. Super exciting, I know! 😅
I kicked things off by choosing my weapons of choice. For this project, I went with Python (because, duh!), Pandas for data wrangling, and PostgreSQL for the database. Pretty standard stuff, but hey, gotta start somewhere, right?
Next up was the data. I decided to scrape some (publicly available!) data from a website. I won’t name names, but let’s just say it involved a lot of requests and BeautifulSoup. Getting the data was actually the easiest part. The real fun started when I had to clean it.

Once the data was reasonably clean, it was time to get it into PostgreSQL. I spun up a local database instance and used psycopg2 to connect from Python. I created a table with the appropriate columns and then wrote a script to loop through my cleaned data and insert it into the database. Boom! Data in the database. Felt like a small victory.
But I didn’t stop there. I wanted to visualize the data, too. So I hooked up the database to a Jupyter Notebook and used Matplotlib and Seaborn to create some basic charts and graphs. Nothing fancy, just some simple visualizations to get a feel for the data.
The whole “mike rome” project took me about a weekend to complete. It wasn’t groundbreaking, and it certainly wasn’t perfect, but I learned a ton in the process. I got more comfortable with data scraping, data cleaning, and database interactions. Plus, I had a tangible result to show for my efforts, which is always a good feeling.
If I were to do it again, I’d probably spend more time on the data cleaning part. It’s amazing how much time you can spend just trying to get your data into a usable format. I’d also explore some more advanced data visualization techniques. But overall, I’m happy with how it turned out.
