The Slowest 40 Time in NFL Combine History

Top 5 Slowest 40 Yard Dash Times in NFL Combine History

Well now, I reckon you all might be wonderin’ about that 40-yard dash folks keep talkin’ about. You know, the one where them football players gotta run real fast across a little stretch of field? It ain’t just for fun, I tell ya! Scouts use it to see how fast them young men can move, and who knows, might even help ’em get into the big leagues. But not everyone is fast like a jackrabbit, no sir. Some folks, well, they sure do struggle with that run, and one name’s stood out as the slowest of ’em all.

Regis Crawford: The Record Holder

Now, let me tell you about this fella, Regis Crawford. Back in 2004, he stepped up to the NFL Combine. He wasn’t just any ol’ player though. Nope, he was a guard from Arizona State. And when it came time for him to run that 40-yard dash, well, he sure made an impression. Only thing was, it weren’t the kind of impression you’d want to make. Crawford finished that 40-yard dash in a whopping 6.07 seconds. That’s the slowest time ever recorded, and it’s still holdin’ strong as the record today!

Now, don’t get me wrong, running ain’t easy, but for some folks, it sure seems harder than others. Crawford’s time was far from impressive, but it sure made history. Some folks still wonder if maybe he tripped or had somethin’ happen during that run, but the fact is, it went down as the slowest time, and it’s somethin’ folks still talk about when they bring up slow 40-yard dashes.

Isaiah Thompson: A Close Second

Top 5 Slowest 40 Yard Dash Times in NFL Combine History

But hold your horses! We ain’t done yet. There’s another fella by the name of Isaiah Thompson, who didn’t do too hot either. Now, Thompson was a big ol’ offensive lineman, and when he ran his 40-yard dash at the 2011 Combine, he managed to finish it in 6.06 seconds. Not much faster than Crawford, but still enough to keep him from takin’ that top spot. I reckon it’s gotta sting a little bit, knowin’ you’re so close to bein’ the slowest, but ain’t quite there yet. Either way, both of ’em earned a spot in the history books for their, uh, slower-than-usual performances.

Why Is the 40-Yard Dash Important?

Now, you might be askin’, “Why’s that 40-yard dash so important anyway?” Well, it’s simple really. Scouts wanna see how fast these players can go when they hit the field. Speed’s a big ol’ factor in the game of football, especially when it comes to positions like wide receivers and cornerbacks. They gotta be quick on their feet to catch passes or make a stop. But not all positions need to be fast. Big ol’ linemen like Crawford and Thompson, they ain’t expected to be speed demons like them wide receivers. Still, that 40 time’s somethin’ everyone’s watchin’, whether you’re a sprinter or a blocker.

The Average 40 Time

Now, if you’re wonderin’ what a decent 40 time might be, here’s a bit of insight for ya. A good average time for wide receivers or cornerbacks tends to be around 4.5 seconds. That’s pretty fast for most folks, especially if you ain’t been runnin’ your whole life. Some of them fast guys even clock in under 4.3 seconds. But you know, there ain’t many who can do that, so don’t feel too bad if you can’t. For a freshman, just gettin’ into the game, a time of about 5.3 seconds is considered average. Not bad at all!

The Slowest Ever: Not Always a Bad Thing

So, you might be thinkin’, well, if my 40 time ain’t the fastest, does that mean I ain’t got no chance? Well, I wouldn’t go that far. Just ’cause you ain’t the quickest doesn’t mean you ain’t got other strengths. Football’s a mighty big game with plenty of positions and skills needed. There’s room for all sorts of players, whether you run like a gazelle or like a tired old mule. What matters is how you play the game, and if you got the heart to keep goin’, slow or fast.

Other Notable Slow 40 Times

  • Chris Redman – This fella, a quarterback out of Louisville, managed a slow time of 5.14 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
  • Isaiah Thompson – As mentioned, he hit 6.06 seconds, one of the slowest times ever.
  • Andrew Walter – Another quarterback who ran a slow time of 5.03 seconds.

So, even though these fellas didn’t set any records for speed, they still made it to the Combine, and some of ’em even had decent careers in the NFL. So don’t let a slow time get you down too much. It’s all about what you do with the talent you got, and how you play when the time comes.

Final Thoughts

Top 5 Slowest 40 Yard Dash Times in NFL Combine History

Well, there you have it, folks. The slowest 40-yard dash times in NFL Combine history, and a little bit of insight into how important (and sometimes not so important) that little sprint really is. Whether you’re quick as a bunny or slow as molasses, there’s a place for you in the game, if you’ve got the grit to keep goin’. Speed’s just one part of the game, and not everyone’s gonna be the fastest runner, but that don’t mean you can’t still get your shot.
